It is hardly surprising that the important city of San Francisco is crammed full of spectacular landmarks and monuments. Famous throughout the world, many of these date back hundreds of years and are in remarkable condition. Here are some of the top landmarks and monuments to visit in San Francisco.

When San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937 it was the longest suspension bridge in the world and was nothing short of a technical marvel. This monumental bridge stretches over 4,200 feet / 1,280 meters and pedestrians are able to walk or cycle along the bridge from the east entrance. There are some excellent lookout points along the way, providing spectacular panoramic views across the bay. The Golden Gate Bridge also has a gift shop and visitors' center, with interesting information about this San Francisco landmark.
One of the best ways to see the Golden Gate Bridge is by a helicopter tour, which is particularly exciting as it flies right underneath the bridge. For an alternative view of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, it is also possible to hire a kayak and row right up to the bridge.

With numerous shops, arcades, seafood restaurants, cafés, fairground rides, street vendors, attractions and excellent ocean views, Pier 39 at Fisherman's Wharf is San Francisco's number one tourist attraction and is a real landmark in the city. There are a simply enormous range of shops on San Francisco's Pier 39 and these include luxurious lingerie, Christmas tree decorations and an intriguing puppet shop.
In 1990 a large number of sea lions took over the whole area and now reside on floating platforms close to the pier. The sea lions are excellent free entertainment, as they climb over each other and are very affectionate to one another. This is a popular tourist attraction in San Francisco and often draws large crowds.

Pioneer's Monument in San Francisco is a tall landmark in the city and is situated in Alamo Square. The monument includes sketches at the base of some the earliest pioneers in California, such as Sir Francis Drake. These days, one of the most interesting features of this monument is that is was one of the only freestanding structures in San Francisco that was left standing after the earthquake in 1906.

This grand fort was built in the mid-19th century and some of the most spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city of San Francisco can be seen from this high lookout. The fort was originally fitted with 126 cannons, although it was never actually involved in any battle. One of Fort Points' most interesting facts is that it featured in the famous Alfred Hitchcock film, Vertigo.

City Hall in San Francisco has a wealth of history and is where many important events have taken place in the city. It is where Marilyn Monroe was married in 1954, and also, more recently, where over 100 gay and lesbian couples were married by the mayor. The building itself is impressive and was designed by two leading architects from Paris almost 100 years ago. On the top of the building is a large dome, that was actually based on the dome of St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome's Vatican City.

The Coit Tower is situated on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco and dates back to 1932. This tall tower stands out in this area and at the top are some of the best panoramic views of San Francisco and the bay in the whole city.

San Francisco's Temple Emanu-El features an enormous dome at the top of the temple. Built in 1925, this grand temple has glorious stained glass windows and is without doubt one of the major monuments and landmarks in the city. The Temple Emanu-El is clearly visible on San Francisco's skyline.
